SOPHIA: Good morning, Badgers! Today, we have two very special guests on this episode of BadgerTalks. I’ll be talking with two students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication to hear what they have to say about campus activities.
Hi Emmerson and Yazmin!
EMMERSON: Hi!
YAZMIN: Hello, Badgers!
SOPHIA: I’ve been out of college for a while now, so I’m wondering how you guys learn about campus events?
EMMERSON: So, actually, we found that throughout our freshman year, there were so many events we didn’t know about that we would’ve attended. There was no streamlined way to hear about opportunities. Especially networking events. Earlier this semester, there was a career fair through the SJMC, filled with people who are doing things I want to do in my future, and I completely missed it because it was thrown into the masses of emails I get every day.
YAZMIN: That’s why we are on a team working to create an app that serves students in this way. It’s called BetterBadger. It gives students a master calendar and helps them navigate their experience at Wisconsin.
SOPHIA: That would’ve been really helpful to me when I went here. I feel like I missed out on a lot of opportunities with potential employers because I didn’t know when the different career events took place ahead of time. With the job market so competitive right now, does this app help students network and meet employers at events?
YAZMIN: That’s one of the best parts of the app! It serves students by keeping them informed on events like career fairs and professional development opportunities, such as free headshots and one-on-one interviews with employers. They can really get their foot in the door and don’t have to try so hard to figure out when events are or feel overwhelmed by all of the emails they get. It’s all in one place.
EMMERSON: Students even get perks for attending the events and meeting with employers. They can get entered into raffles, get prizes, and more… just for using the app and being proactive!
SOPHIA: Okay, so students just download the app, and it has features like the master calendar that notifies them about events? And they are encouraged to attend events through incentives?
EMMERSON: Yes! Students download this FREE app to have access to the master calendar, as well as the ability to filter events based on their major and interests!
YAZMIN: And it incentivizes students to go to events with our Build-A-Bucky feature that is built into the app! Every time you go to an event, you will unlock new accessories, clothing, and backgrounds to build your own Bucky.
EMMERSON: That’s one of my favorite features; without the app, I wouldn’t have known about the Communications Career Fair that took place earlier this semester! Which earned me an interview with an employer and a cute camera accessory for my Bucky!
SOPHIA: That sounds great. Badgers, call in now to give us your thoughts on BetterBadger.
