Art is often overlooked as a form of self care despite its plentiful benefits. Here at UW-Madison the Chazen Museum of Art offers various activities and exhibits free of charge to UW students.

The Chazen opened in 1970 and includes over 24,000 works of art. Specialized exhibits like the current “Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within” allows the museum to showcase a rotating collection of new pieces and stories.

Beyond physical art, the museum also hosts various events. Events like the 2025 Sip and Shop Holiday Art Market feature local vendors and holiday spirit. They also host musical guests such as the Wingra Wind Quintet. Other events include specialized study days for students, providing a quiet and positive space within the museum, surrounded by all the art.

The Chazen works to provide these events and galleries to help their local community through art. Art is a practice that can benefit mental health through stress reduction, creating a sense of positivity through creativity. Simply walking through the Chazen in-between classes can help boost your mood and brighten your day, as viewing art can activate the brain’s reward pathways.

Art provides the ultimate space to de-stress, benefiting the brain in the long run.

These events often go overlooked as well, but with BetterBadger students will be able to access lists of these events, connecting them with these creative events the Chazen offers, as well as other opportunities to let your own creativity shine.
